The Wandering Brush
with David Reames

In this class, students will create Autumn’s Threshold—a peaceful, whimsical oil painting that captures the fleeting warmth of autumn against the timeless strength of stone. Guided step by step, participants will explore a mountain landscape framed by the fire and sparkle of fall foliage, learning how to balance vibrant foreground elements such as crimson maples and winding paths with the cool, distant presence of towering peaks beneath a clear blue sky. Along the way, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of oil painting, including materials, color mixing, composition, and value studies, before moving into underpainting and tonal blocking on a 16x20 canvas. As the painting develops, emphasis will be placed on brush control, color harmony, perspective, and texture, with opportunities to refine details, add personal touches, and create a compelling focal point. The class will conclude with glazing techniques, finishing touches, and artist signatures, followed by a group reflection and certificate presentation to celebrate each artist’s unique interpretation of the scene.
