Adult Playwrighting
with Kira Rockwell
$190
"In truth, theatre is also fiction, is also poetry, is also painting, is also dance..." says the award-winning playwright and educator, Paula Vogel.
In this six-week playwriting class, you'll learn the fundamentals of dramatic writing for the stage in a supportive company. This class is designed for beginner playwrights who want to see their ideas actualized, and intermediate folks seeking structure and accountability to write, "end of scene."
Each week you'll engage in generative writing prompts, light craft exercises, and have the opportunity to hear your work read out loud by your peers using a writer-centered feedback approach that is both constructive and nourishing for new plays in development.
Outside of class, you are invited to read craft essays, listen to podcast interviews of contemporary playwrights, and analyze plays by a collection of diverse dramatists (both in identity and style) such as Hansol Jung, Karen Zavarías, and John Logan.
By the end of the class, you should expect to come away with a collection of monologues, scenes of dialogue with theatrical stage directions, and a stronger hand at world building, character development, plot, and the magic that is theatre. The class will culminate with a session focused on the business of playwriting where you'll receive a plethora of resources to keep you motivated and connected to the theatre community at large.
